Abstract:  The adaptation of Photonic ICs (PICs) is rapidly growing across the industry segments such as telecom, data centers, optical interconnects, automotive, sensing, aerospace & defense, artificial intelligence (AI) and photonic computing. The PICs are becoming complex and component count is increasing at a rapid pace. One problem is the lack of complete and mature model libraries, partly due to the current maturity of the ecosystem, and partly because of the wide variety of photonic devices required to address a certain application. As a result, the design flow must support custom photonics. In addition, co-packaged optics (CPO) and xPU I/O are driving more complex trade-offs between electronics and photonics. Gone are the days when it was sufficient to model photonics at the back of the envelope, with some homegrown code or as electronics in electrical circuit simulators. In this talk, I will present a schematic-driven PIC design flow in Synopsys OptoCompiler. OptoCompiler is the industry’s first unified electronic and photonic design platform, combining mature and dedicated photonic technology with Synopsys’ industry-proven electronic design tools and methods to enable engineers to produce and verify complex PIC designs quickly and accurately.

Biography:  Jigesh Patel is Product Manager for photonic circuit and system simulation tools at Synopsys. Jigesh has 20+ years of experience in fiber optics and communication systems. He received his master’s degree in engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology. Jigesh's areas of interest include silicon photonics, coherent and IM/DD fiber-optics, microwave photonics, data-center and automotive interconnects. Prior to Synopsys, Jigesh was a researcher at the Advanced Technologies Lab at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and Application Engineering Manager at RSoft. His prior research includes secure optical networks, indoor infra-red communication, and high-speed fiber-optics, some of which was funded/co-funded by NSA, DARPA and SBIR. Jigesh has collaborated on a number of topics with the industry and academia, and has led modeling related projects with the top tier foundries. Jigesh is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
